So I'm getting a new to me vehicle. Without giving away a lot of specifics to anyone but 505Turbeaux who knows all about this new vehicle, I have a VIN and just want to cover my ass and make sure the thing wasn't stolen at knife point from an orphanage for children under 90lbs and only the cutest of puppies. Should I just call the DMV? Is there a way to do this that works the best/fastest?

If your state has the notary law (where the title has to be notarized) tell him you wont go through with the deal until he has the DMV notarize the title. And you be there when it happens

Is there a licence plate on the car? You could have that ran in stead of the vin. Just be honest and say your checking if the car is stolen.

call up the cop shop, explain the situation. Or you can have a local pd in the town the car is being sold in do a vin verification on it for like 10 bucks or so
